If you are beginning to think that you are in need of more space in your home then you have probably looked into the house prices for homes slightly larger than your own. If this is the case then you will have by now noticed how expensive houses are these days. Even those areas seen as more affordable have increased to an unsustainable level. For many this prevents them from moving home and leaves them in desperate need for more space. A cluttered house only leads to more stress and a lower quality of life.

A great alternative is to build extra space which when you look at the reasons it is a fantastic move. Where as to buy a larger house you would be a more expensive property adding tens of thousands to the mortgage not to mention the cost of estate agents, solicitors and removal men. There is then the risk you don’t like the neighbours or the area. There are three main ways to enlarge your home. All of which have different pros and con’s attached to them.

The first and most obvious is to build an extension. This can be either a one story or a two story extension depending on your needs, the space you have to hand and your budget. A one story extension can be made cheaper if you for example used an existing garage and just renovated it turning it into an extra room. The real cost comes from two story extensions where there is major alterations including solid foundations, walls and utilities.

Conservatories are an alternative to the extension and are particularly good if what you are after is more living space rather than bedrooms and bathrooms. A conservatory will have to be built with solid foundations like an extension but is far more likely to be used as a place of rest such as reading the paper or meditating or as some do the growing of plants and vegetables.

While building an extension or a conservatory is a great way to increase your space some people do not have any space in which to build. For this there is an alternative. If you have a large loft space it could be converted typically into a extra bedroom. While space can often be limited if you design it right it could be a great bedroom for a child or alternatively a playroom or office. This will be cheaper than a new build and is perfect if you cannot do the other options.

So there are the three main options for increasing the space you have at home without the upheaval and cost of moving home. Not all of these will be appropriate but one of them should be. If none are possible then the alternative of looking at how your furniture can maximise your space should be considered. Many of us do not have the luxury of a utility room because that is just what it is in today’s modern world.  Our Grandparents, some living in the two up, two down era would never have known what to put into a utility room had they had one.  After all they had no Dishwasher, Freezer, Washing Machine, Tumble Dryer etc etc.

But how many of us with Utility rooms actually make full use of their full potential and space.  This is a very versatile room and if used correctly could mean a lot of your time is spent in it.  Therefore you should ensure that you make the most of the area and make it a light and pleasant place to work in.

Most utility rooms are multifunctional and are utilised as headquarters for the laundry, gardening and storage.  Irrespective of their size these rooms should be made into light, airy and organized places.  Two of the best ways to achieve this is through the medium of shelves and boxes.

Shelves provide you with one of the easiest ways in which to start organizing the area whatever size your utility room is.  Any old shelves should be taken down and room made for the new.  You can buy metal or plastic but both have their downsides.  The former is usually an eyesore and the latter not very sturdy.   The choice is yours but whatever choice you make there are ways to improve their looks.  For example you can stagger the distance between the shelves.  This gives added visual interest.  With plastic shelves have smaller ones at the top for the light items and larger below for the heavier things.

If they need brightening up then grab a paint brush and paint them.  Paint is available these days for virtually any type of surface.  Why not splash out (pun intended) and paint them each a different colour.  At least paint them a different colour to the wall unless the room is small then it might make the place look larger if they were the same colour as the wall.

Once the shelves are in situ turn your attention to storage boxes.  Utilise these boxes on the shelves as opposed to just throwing everything onto the shelves with no thought of tidiness.  Put large boxes on the bottom shelves for the heavier items.  This seems obvious but we do not all think with the same brainpower as each other.  Thus smaller boxes on the top shelves.  Your doing this should enable you to have organization within your utility room and make things easy to find when needed.

In order to remember what is in each box number the boxes and keep a written note of the contents on a separate sheet of paper.
